Dear Perfect Stranger,

How are you doing today? Well, I hope. I’d like to share with you a quote about imagination and fantasy which I find inspiring. I hope you will too.

” Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape?… If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people as we can!”

– J.R.R. Tolkein

So please attempt to share your ideas and your fantasies. The workings of the mind are always worth sharing.

How are you doing today? I hope that you are doing well and if not, I hope this note serves as a little pick-me-up during your day.

I’m not sure about you but I never really stop and take time to reflect on how far we’ve come as a species. I mean we live in such a different world than when our species first evolved or if you don’t believe in that, a different world than a few hundred years ago. It’s just that our species has progressed (depending on your view) so much that its mind-boggling.

Think about it. Just a hundred years ago or further, few people travelled more than a few hundred kilometers from where they were born. Few people left their countries of birth. Today, one can just hop in a plane and go from one side of the world to another in mere hours. Even when it comes to the number of people one meets in their lifetime, we’re lucky. Hundreds of years ago, chances were you wouldn’t meet more than about a hundred people over your lifetime. Today, we can meet than many people in hours using social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. And we can keep in touch with people all around the world.

So maybe not all of us have all of these luxuries but those of us in the developed world are extremely fortunate. We have come quite far as a species. I suppose congratulations are in order. So congrats humans!

Dear Perfect Stranger,

How are you doing today? I hope you’re doing well and if not, I hope this note serves as a little pick-me-up during your day.

What do you think about neighbours. They can be friendly people who sometimes drop by for a quick chat but otherwise keep to themselves or they can be annoying people who rev their motorcycles at 2:00am and don’t keep their lawns cut. I’m sure you’ve experienced both ends of this spectrum. Bur definitely more often that not, these days most people don’t know their neighbours well at all. That’s probably not the greatest thing because social scientists tell us that we rely on these kinds of social networks in times of need. Take for example your home is on fire, who’s going to help you before the firefighters? Your neighbours. Not only that but human interaction tends to make people happy. So getting to know your neighbours is not only good for the individual but also the whole community. So by all means, let’s get to know their stories. Let’s get to know our neighbours. Let’s improve our communities.
