6 word stories February 3, 2012

Dear Perfect Stranger,

I’ve always held some interest in the power of words and how powerful just a few words can be. Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” and he apparently called it his best work. The six words immediately launch a series of questions. Why are the shoes for sale? What happened to the baby? Was there ever a baby? Who is that mysterious person selling the shoes?

When asked to write similar, 6 word stories, writers had a plethora of ideas. Some of my favorites include:

Longed for him. Got him. Shit.
Margaret Atwood

From torched skyscrapers, men grew wings.
Gregory Maguire

Nevertheless, he tried a third time.
James P. Blaylock

Thought I was right. I wasn’t.
Graeme Gibson

Writing a 6 word story is harder than you’d think. I’m still working on mine.

Do you have any ideas that can be put into 6 words?

Your friendly picker upper 🙂
