Note:

Dear Perfect Stranger,

I hope that the person that picks up this card is actually a first year. Are you a freshman? How are you doing today? I hope that you are doing well and if not, I hope that this note serves as a little pick-me-up during your first few days of university classes. A lot of things must be going through your mind like “Can I do this?” and “What if it’s too hard?”. I’m here to tell you that yes, you can do it. University is one of those things that if you put in the effort, you’ll succeed in. So here are a few tips to success.

  1. Make sure you leave time for fun after finishing assignments and studying.
  2. Get to know as many different kinds of people as possible.
  3. Get involved in the McMaster community by joining a club, IRC etc.
  4. Pop the McMaster bubble and really learn about Hamilton.

If these tips don’t help, ask your reps or CA’s for help. They’d love to!

Sincerely,

Your friendly picker upper

Dear Perfect Stranger,

How are you doing today? I hope you’re doing well and if not, I hope this note serves as a little pick-me-up during your day.

Analyst Richard St. John conducted over 500 interviews of people that we consider to be successful. He asked them for tips on how to be successful and was able to narrow it down to eight simple words.

  1. Passion – do it for love not money
  2. Work – nothing worthwhile comes easily
  3. Good – get good at something, practice!
  4. Focus – focus yourself on one thing
  5. Push – push yourself mentally and physically
  6. Serve – serve others something of value
  7. Ideas – make connections, be original
  8. Persist – persist through failure and conflicts

So now you know the keys to success but the real question is what is success? Is it being a millionaire? Well if it is, you might not need all of these tips. I think real success is personal success not monetary success. Real success is sharing with people what you have, respecting others, investing in ideas, kindness and children’s futures. People like this should be admired. They move the world, metaphorically. Maybe Richard St. John’s tips to success will help create those world moving people. Will you be one of them?

Sincerely,

Your friendly picker upper

Dear Perfect Stranger,

Getting to a successful place in your work, social or love life is no simple task. Sometimes its complex and there are many factors that deter us from reaching success. Think about it. If reaching success was simple, everyone or almost everyone would be successful. Luckily or unluckily for us, not all of us have reached points in our lives where we believe we’re successful.

I love how David Jones put it, “The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, and caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs but if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, and insurance called faith, you will make it to a place called success.”

So don’t give up on success! Put in the hard work and you’ll get there some day!

Sincerely,

Your friendly picker upper 🙂
